Saints men's soccer run ends in the Sweet 16

The St. Lawrence men's soccer team's run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end in the Sweet 16 on Saturday afternoon, as they fell 2-0 to the Haverford Fords on Walton Field in Haverford, Pa.

It's the first time the Saints have allowed two goals all season, both of which came in the first half. But even down a pair of goals, St. Lawrence continued to pressure the Fords and generated a number or scoring opportunities in the second half.

"I've never seen guys battle the way some of these players do," Head Coach Mike Toshack said. "I'm extremely proud of this team. I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys to coach my first year. The senior leadership was outstanding; hats off to that group for their hard work these past four years."

Haverford opened up a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute off a defensive miscue in the box which set up Sam Yarosh on the six for a low finish inside the far post. They then extended the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when Brady Seitz flicked on a free kick from Will Corkery and beat Saints senior goalkeeper Ryan Roethel high under the crossbar.

The Saints came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half, outshooting the Fords 8-5, including four shots on goal, in the final 45 minute and holding Haverford without a shot on goal.

The best opportunity of the game for St. Lawrence came from senior Jonathan Mendoza in the 86th minute; he volleyed service from the six but Sam Miller was these to close the door and preserve the shutout.

Roethel, who was stellar in goal for St. Lawrence during his senior season, finished with one save. In his first season as a starter he was among the national leaders for goals against average, earned Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors and climbed into a tie for second in program history for shutouts for a season.

Fellow seniors, Harry Copeland, Jonathan Mendoza, Ryan Grant, Edward Gonzalez, Dan Hunt, Praveen Balakumaran and Christian Yarros, as well as Roethel played their final game for the Scarlet and Brown on Saturday. As a class, they finish with a record of 64-12-9 record, including a 40-3-3 record here at home.
