The nationally-ranked No. 16 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team saw its 2013 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the Sweet 16 as Greg Singer's second goal of the contest came in double overtime, lifting the No. 2 Amherst College Lord Jeffs past the Saints 2-1 at Hitchcock Field. The goal extended the Lord Jeff's unbeaten streak to 40 games, and came despite a heroic goal by St. Lawrence's Austin Roney with only :44 seconds left in regulation to force the extra session.

Amherst (18-0-2) will face Williams in the elite eight tomorrow at 1:30pm, while the Saints finish the campaign with a 17-3-2 record.

"We were pounding on the door throughout the second half and we just kept pushing," said St. Lawrence head coach Bob Durocher. "I was proud of the way we applied pressure in the second half and in the first overtime, but just couldn't get the game-winner."

The two teams played a scoreless first half that saw Amherst build a 10-2 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Aaron Costello made several brilliant stops to keep the Scarlet and Brown tied, including a diving save to his left to rob Max Fikke. The Saints' best scoring bid in the opening half came on a corner in front of keeper Thomas Bull, as the ball bounced towards Jamal Samaroo in the 18 but he failed to connect on a header try.

After controlling much of the play in the first half, the Lord Jeffs needed only 1:12 into the second half to take a 1-0 advantage. Singer was able to recover a loose ball in the right side of the box and strike it past Costello in the corner of the net for the go-ahead tally.

With its season on the line, St. Lawrence began to push the ball up the field and attack the Amherst defense. Several Saints had bids near the box, including Harry Copeland and Samaroo, but were unable to score on Bull. Noah Bunton appeared to have the game tied as his shot got past Bull, but Julien Aoyama made a diving stop at the goal line to clear the ball away from danger.

In the final minute of play, the Saints put together one final rush, as a cross to the top of the 18 found Roney. He settled the ball and fired a perfectly-placed shot into the top-right corner past Bull with only :44 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal gave St. Lawrence the entire momentum heading into the extra period with new life.

The Saints nearly stunned Amherst midway through the first 10:00 minute period, as Seyefe Brouk's bid drilled the left post and the rebound came to Samaroo in the 18. Samaroo directed a shot towards goal, but the Jeff keeper made a remarkable one-handed save to set up the second overtime.

Seconds into the second overtime period, the Jeffs put strong pressure on Costello and the Saints' defense, as Chris Martin sent a solid header to net that was blocked by a Saint defender. As the ball bounced around right in front of the net, it made its way to Singer who fired a shot from the middle of the box into the back of the net to give Amherst the thrilling 2-1 victory.

St. Lawrence outshot Amherst 11-5 after the first half, but was outshot 17-13 in the contest. The Jeffs finished with 8-4 advantage in corner kicks and Bull made five saves. Costello made four stops for the Scarlet and Brown.
