First year Dylan McDonough scored his first-collegiate goal but it wasn't enough to stop SUNY Plattsburgh from defeating the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Aidan Callahan took a corner kick for the Saints during the 16th minute of play and McDonough capitalized on an unsettled ball in the box to put the Saints up 1-0.

The Saints held a one-goal advantage over the Cardinals until the 64th minute when Sean Cray tipped a pass to Nicholas Laurent, who headed the shot past goalkeeper Mike Smith.

Just 21 seconds later, Connor Nembach found the back of the net once again for Plattsburgh to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

"The players that were on the field today gave 100-percent effort, but the execution and quality of play wasn't there," said head coach Mike Toshack. "We look towards the league game on Saturday against Union and getting a few more healthy bodies back into the lineup as we begin our Liberty League campaign."

The Cardinals' Sean Gray tallied his first goal of the season off a feed from Elver Maldonado for SUNY Plattsburgh's third and final goal of the game.

SUNY Plattsburgh edged the Saints with a 7-6 shots on goal advantage. Smith recorded four saves with the loss and Cardinals' goalkeeper Patrick Feeley tallied five for the win.

The Saints fell to 2-4-1 on the season, while the Cardinals advanced to 6-2 overall.

St. Lawrence will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field Saturday, Sept. 23rd to host Union at 1 p.m.
