Vassar's Jose Novas scored in the 84th minute of play to lift the Brewers to a 2-1 win over the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team in a Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, New York. After today's contest the Saints are pushed to second place in the league standings.
Henrik Olsson put the Brewers on the board just over five minutes into play to give Vassar an early 1-0 lead.
Jethro Dede tied the game for the Saints at the 77:47 mark to keep the win in sight for the Saints. Ryan Roche assisted on the play.
Mattie Mrlik tipped Novas a pass in front of the Saints goal for the 2-1 lead and the win.
Vassar outshot the Saints 19-9 and held a 7-6 shots on goal advantage.
"The players gave a great effort today against Vassar, which is a top of the league game," said head coach Mike Toshack. "The players adjusted well and took the game to Vassar in the second half and got the equalizer. We created some excellent scoring chances and some great saves by the Vassar goalkeeper kept us from a few more points. I'm very proud of the fighting spirit of the team, giving everything right to the end, finishing with a corner kick to Vassar's box in the dying seconds of the game."
Both Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith and Vassar's Matt Marcelino finished with five saves.
St. Lawrence fell to 6-5-3 on the season and 4-1-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar improved to 8-3-2 and remained undefeated in conference play at 5-0-1.
