Sophomore Rob Brandell broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute to help the St. Lawrence men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday evening in Plattsburgh.
The Saints, now 6-2-0 on the season, fell into a 1-0 hole when sophomore keeper Sean Houston came charging off the line to challenge Cardinals forward Alexis Archilla for a 50-50 ball at the top of the box. Archilla won the race and touched the ball around Houston and easily into the empty net for the first goal of the game.
But with just eight seconds remaining in the first half, junior Praveen Balakumaran pulled the Saints even at 1-1 after classmate Harry Copeland headed an Austin Roney throw into the box. Balakumaran ran through the loose ball on the edge of the six and beat Plattsburgh goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon in the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.
Brandell put the Saints on top for good when he volleyed a free kick from senior captain Mark Provost from 12 yards out over the outstretched arm of Jordon and just under the crossbar. The goal is Brandell's third of the season, tying him with Morgan Smith and Chandler Short for the team lead.
Houston finished with two saves for the Saints, while Jordon made five saves for Plattsburgh (5-3-1).
The Saints will open Liberty League play on Sandy MacAllaster field this Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 pm against Hobart.
