Saints men's lacrosse win over Vassar

Senior Jeremy Vautour scored six goals and handed out one assist and junior Conor Healey added a pair of goals and four assists as the St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse team, ranked #5 in the latest USILA/Nike National poll, posted a 14-5 victory over Vassar College Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League match-up on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton.

After a close first half with St. Lawrence (12-1 overall, 4-1 Liberty League) holding a 3-2 lead on two Vautour goals and one Healey goal, the Saints erupted for six goals in the second quarter and allowed just one to the Brewers (7-5, 2-2) taking a 9-3 lead into halftime.

In the second quarter, Jamie DeNicola and Jon Fairbanks opened the St. Lawrence scoring with goals in the first five minutes of the period. Vautour scored the next three consecutive goals in a span of less than two minutes and Connor Brimley closed out the half with a goal for the Saints.

In the third quarter, Healey, Vautour and AJ Schmidt each scored as the Saints took a commanding 12-3 lead. Vassar added a goal with just five seconds remaining in the quarter to cut the lead to 12-4.

Andrew Jarrett scored early in the final quarter and the team traded goals in the closing minutes as Dan Wyman scored his first goal of the season with five minutes left to close out the scoring.

St. Lawrence dominated the statistics for the game firing 59 shots including 37 on goal and winning 15 of the 22 face-offs. The Saints also forced 19 turnovers.

Vautour led the Saints with seven points and Healey was close behind with his six points. Schmidt and DeNicola recorded two points each with a goal and an assist. Alec Dietsch won 12 face-offsa nd collected nine ground balls for the Saints. Ryan Fisher picked up win number 12 on the season making five saves while Patrick Sullivan made one save playing the final quarter in the St. Lawrence goal.

The Saints will face SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night with a 7 pm game at Potsdam before returning to Liberty League play next Saturday at RPI.
