Sophomore Carson Gicewicz's first goal of the season midway through the third period helped the St. Lawrence men's hockey team to a 4-4 tie with Canisius on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

With the tie, the Saints are now 3-14-2 on the year while Canisius moves to 10-7-2. It is the second consecutive 4-4 tie at home for St. Lawrence, having also tied RPI by the same score back in November.

After taking a 3-1 lead early in the second period, St. Lawrence gave up three straight to the visiting Golden Griffins, including two on the power play to fall behind 4-3 with 9:09 to play. However, Gicewicz netted the equalizer just 11 seconds later to help the Scarlet and Brown force overtime.

In addition to Gicewicz, Ryan Lough also got back in the goals column for the Saints, scoring his first since October 28 at Wisconsin. Mike Marnell and Joe Sullivan tallied the other goals for St. Lawrence to extend their respective points streaks.

Canisius was led by a pair of goals from Nick Hutchison, as well as goal from Matt Long and a Matt Hoover. Hoover's goal on the power play gave Canisius its brief lead in the third period.

Lough and the Saints opened the scoring at the 3:29 mark of the first period, as he buried the rebound from a shot by Jake Stevens after Stevens intercepted a clear attempt by the Griffs at the blue line.

Thirty three seconds later, Hutchison scored his first of the night with a backhand finish on an odd-man rush to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the frame, Canisius attempted to play the puck back to the blue line, but it hopped over a defenseman's stick and, in turn, sprung Marnell on a breakaway. He lifted a backhand to beat Canisius goaltender Simon Hofley over the right shoulder and give the Saints a 2-1 lead at 15:05.

In the final minute of the first period the Saints' Daniel Mannella robbed Grant Meyer with a glove save on doorstep to keep the Saints in front. Mannella made 15 of his 36 saves in the first 20 minutes.

Early in the second period, Sullivan extended the lead to 3-1 nine seconds after a power play opportunity had expired and the Saints were still buzzing after pinning the Griffs in their own zone for a lengthy stretch. Nolan Gluchowski backhanded a centering pass to Sullivan in the slot, and the captain beat Hofley five hole for his eighth of the season. Ben Finkelstein also assisted on the play.

At the 7:52 mark of the middle frame, Hutchison cut the deficit to 3-2 with a power play goal. Long tied the game at the 4:26 mark of the third period, before Hoover put Canisius in front at 11:51.

The Saints won the ensuing draw and Lough carried into Canisius zone before putting a shot on Hofley, which he couldn't cover up. Pritchard was waiting on the doorstep and had a shot at it, but it was Gicewicz that jammed the puck home for his first of the season and his third career goal against the Griffs.

The Saints had a number of chances down the stretch and in the overtime period, but Hofley came up big with a clutch glove save on Gluchowski with just under 1:30 to play in the extra frame to help clinch the tie.

Like Mannella, Hofley finished with 36 saves, including four in the overtime period as the Saints had the better of the play for the majority of the final five minutes.

Canisius finished 2-for-6 with the man advantage while the Saints were 0-for-3.

The teams will return to Appleton Arena for a 7 p.m. rematch on Saturday night in the Saints' final non-conference game of the season.
