Saints' men’s basketball wins overtime thriller on the road

Kyle Edwards scored five of his team-leading 18 points in overtime leading the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team to an 80-73 overtime victory over Vassar College Saturday afternoon in a Liberty League contest in Poughkeepsie.

Vassar (9-10 Overall, 5-5 Liberty League) hit a 3-pointer late in the second half to knot the score at 66-66 and when the Saints (10-7, 6-3) missed a late jumper, the game went to the overtime session.

St. Lawrence connected on just 3-of-10 shots from the field in the five-minute extra session but hit all seven free throws including four by Riley Naclerio to push ahead and secure the victory. Vassar did not have a single free throw in overtime and connected on just three of its 10 field goal attempts as well.

In the first half, Willie Zachery paced the Saints with nine points while Naclerio added seven as each team scored 33 points in the opening 20 minutes of action. The Saints had a pair of five-point leads in the first half as neither team could manage any run to break away.

Edwards scored eight points in the second half while Dom DeRegis came off the bench to score 11 points including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range as each team again scored 33 points. St. Lawrence took a six-point lead on an Edwards 3-pointer and held the largest lead in regulation play when DeRegis nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Saints a 10-point lead at 60-50.

Vassar answered with 16 of the final 22 points of the half to tie the score and force the overtime period.

In overtime, Edwards hit a 3-pointer Chris Miner converted a three-point play with 1:42 left to give the Saints the lead for good at 72-71. Zachery hit a layup and then Edwards and Naclerio hit two free throws each to open up a seven-point advantage before Naclerio hit two more free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory.

Edwards led four players into double digits with his 18 points while Zachery finished with 15 points and Naclerio and DeRegis each added 11. Ben Crawford scored six points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Kyle Kobis scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out seven assists for the Saints.

St. Lawrence returns home Tuesday night for an 8 pm Liberty League matchup with Skidmore.
