Saints men's basketball top Soaring Eagles, 62-50

The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team defeated Elmira College, 62-50, in Saturday's non-conference match-up in the Burkman Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles cut the deficit to five points (46-41) with 9:09 remaining, but the Saints were able to close the game with a 16-9 run for their first victory of the season.

St. Lawrence moves to 1-3 and was led by three in double figures. Junior Janpeter Brase had a team-high 13 points and five rebounds, while junior Al Jones andsophomore Tell White tallied 11 points and 10 points, respectively. White and Jones also combined for seven rebounds and five assists, while Jones scored seven of his points in the final stretch to keep the momentum in the home team's favor.

Elmira remains winless on the season with an 0-4 mark despite Chris Cassidy's game-high 17 points. Neil Randolph added 10 points while Dan O'Brien had seven points for the Soaring Eagles.

St. Lawrence, which led 29-22 at halftime, stretched its lead to as high as 13 points in the second half before Elmira crept back to within five on a three-pointer by Cassidy at 9:09. The Saints, however, made several key offensive plays and were 5-of-6 from the line in the final minutes to stretch their lead back into double figures for the final 3:12 of the game.

St. Lawrence outrebounded Elmira 46-27 in the game, though the Soaring Eagles committed five fewer turnovers than the Saints (15-10).

The Saints will take on the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton tomorrow afternoon at SUNY Canton. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
