Saints Lexi Brown breaks career kills record in Liberty League split

Lexi Brown spent just one day in second place on the St. Lawrence University Volleyball All-Time career kills list. The senior passed Jessica Lucky who accumulated 1,320 kills from 2006-09 Friday night and then passed Nyasha Miller for first place on the all-time list with her 14th kill of the day in the second set against Union Saturday afternoon at Clarkson University.

Miller had 1,341 kills from 2008-11. Brown now has 1,343 kills in her four year career. That total will surely increase as the Saints (15-16 Overall, 7-5 Liberty League) wrap up the regular season with three matches at the Buffalo State Invitational and at least one more match at the Liberty League Tournament.

The Saints finished in a tie for third place in the final Liberty League standings at 7-5 with RIT. The Liberty League Tournament is set to start November 6 at Clarkson University.

On Saturday, the Saints scored a 3-0 win over Skidmore with set scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-9 but dropped a 3-0 decision to Union in the second match of the day by set scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-14.

In the Skidmore match, Cristina Deschaine led the way with 10 kills while Brown had eight and Grace Kelly added six for the Saints. Deschaine added five blocks and Marisa Turner four. Turner also had four aces, Katie Kull handed out 27 assists and Mariah Dignan led the defense with 10 digs while Kull added nine digs.

"I thought our team did a very good job of executing our game plan against Skidmore," said Head Coach Shelly Roiger. "We were very aggressive and made smart choices which led to great first ball termination for us. Our passing was outstanding and we were able to run efficient offense."

In the Union loss, Kelly led the offense with nine kills while Brown added seven and Maddy Ruehl chipped in six. Deschaine recorded four blocks, Kull had 25 assists and Brown led the defense with 10 digs.

"I was very disappointed with our lake of aggressiveness against Union," continued Roiger. "They are an excellent team but I felt we played very hesitant and fearful against them. The only way you can beat great teams like Union is to match their intensity and level of aggressiveness. I'm confident that our team has learned from this experience. When we play hesitant and reactive instead of dictating the game, we are unable to set the tone for the match. Union did that to us and we never recovered."

St. Lawrence will face Buffalo State Friday night and take on Allegheny and St. John Fisher Saturday at Buffalo State to finish the regular season.
