Junior Mac Johnson and sophomore Pierson Fowler scored 11 seconds apart with 6:34 remaining as the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team turned a one-goal deficit into an 8-7 lead as the Saints held on for the victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon in Montclair, NJ.

Fowler finished with two goals and two assists while Johnson collected two scores as the Saints moved to 2-0 on the season with their second straight one-goal victory. St. Lawrence opened the year with a 7-6 win over Haverford. Meanwhile, senior attack Tyler Meth scored four goals for Montclair State, which fell to 0-4 on the year.

Deadlocked through the first three quarters, Montclair State took a 7-6 lead 2:45 into the fourth as junior Jack Skeels scored a man-up goal on sharp angle from the right side as the Red Hawks regained the lead. Though Montclair State would maintain that advantage over the next six minutes, the Saints gained control and Fowler evened the game at 7-7 with 6:45 left in regulation.

It wouldn't stay tied for long as Jake Wynn grabbed the ground ball off the ensuing faceoff win by Steve Cargill and fed Johnson on the left side for the go-ahead goal as St. Lawrence took its first lead since the 5:53 mark of the first quarter, 8-7.

The goal would hold up as St. Lawrence held possession for most of the remaining time while also killing off two penalties. Montclair State would get once last chance in the closing minute, however captain Matt Parker intercepted an errant pass with 22 seconds left allowing St. Lawrence to run out the clock for the victory.

Junior Dave Schoettler and senior Kyle Jacobsen each added a pair of goals for St. Lawrence, while Davey Hovey (3) and Matt Pope (2) each had multi-assist games.

Cargill was 12-of-16 on face-offs for St. Lawrence and also added six ground balls, tying Cam Scullen for team honors. Jack Nuland stopped three shots over the final 30:00 minutes after taking over for Jeff Goeke, who made four saves. Wynn and Brian Wilber each caused three turnovers. Mark Glander had 17 saves for Montclair State, which was outshot 33-16

St. Lawrence will be in action again on Tuesday, March 13 as the squad heads Virginia Beach, VA to take on Geneseo State at 1:00pm.
