The St. Lawrence University men's crew team had an impressive outing at the 2013 New York State Championships in Whitney Point, NY this weekend. Despite a late spring and limited water time, the Saints' varsity 8+ won the petite final and the second varsity 8+ climbed two spots to finish fourth in the grand final.
"With such a difficult spring weather-wise, I'm thrilled with the way our guys competed this weekend," said St. Lawrence head coach George Repicky. "We showed great progress with such a young team. I'm really excited and optimistic about the future with this group."
The varsity 8+ won the petite final in 6:26.48 after narrowly missing out on the grand final. Their victory, which came over RIT, Skidmore, Hamilton and RPI, came in 6:26:48. The win showed great progress, as the team had previously lost to RIT by nearly :20 seconds earlier this spring.
The second varsity 8+ qualified as the No. 6 boat in the grand final, but posted a time of 6:39.20 to move up to fourth place ahead of Rochester and Union. Hobart won the race followed by Marist and Ithaca.
The varsity 8+ included Travis Galowski, Francis Stripp, Ted Marr, Jack Riordan, Michael Brewer, Sam Pratt, Talon Lomahquahu, Kyle Benzing and coxswain Audrey Strasenburgh. The 2nd varsity was comprised of Chester Hojnicki, Tom Joyce, Steve Grow, Drew Twitchell, Andy Caswell, Dan Tobin, Michael Lynskey, Justin Dalaba and coxswain Shelby Hang.
St. Lawrence will compete for the final time this spring next weekend at the 2013 ECAC Championships in Worcester, MA.
