Saints have field hockey chances, but fall in Overtime

Opportunity knocked…and knocked and knocked, but St. Lawrence University’s field hockey team couldn’t take advantage of their scoring chances, dropping their third straight with a 1-0 overtime loss to Hartwick on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Saints outshot Hartwick 20-18 and had a number of other great chances deep in the Hartwick end in which shots went just wide or Saint players just missed a tip which might have given the Saints the lead. But, the Hawks, with the help of nine saves from goalie Megan Campbell, forced the game into overtime and with the teams playing seven-on-seven, Hartwick scored the game winner on an upfield rush.

Senior Kelsey Kimble took the ball up the middle of the field and split a pair of Saint defenders. Saint goalie Brady Cooper, who played well in her third start of the season, came out to challenge the shot, but Kimble sent a pass to Katie Lonsky, who was coming up the left side and Lonsky hit the empty cage with a shot on the redirection for her second collegiate goal.

The Saints had several good scoring chance sin each half including one with 15 minutes to go by Emma Berry which got past Campbell, but glanced off the goal post and stayed out of the cage. The Saints had six penalty corners in the second half among eight in the game, but could not convert.

“We have been really struggling to score goals and it showed again today” said Saint coach Fran Grembowicz. “We made some good plays in their end to set up chances, but didn’t finish them off.”

The Saints, now 0-3, will try to get back on track when they play Lebanon Valley and Manhattanville at William Smith on Saturday and Sunday.
