The St. Lawrence University alpine ski teams competed in the 2015 Saint Michael's Carnival at Smuggler's Notch this weekend. Hayes Graham starred on Friday, as he earned eighth place overall in the men's giant slalom, while Maria Hillenbrand had a career-best 17th place finish in the women's slalom on Saturday.
Graham delivered two impressive top-20 runs in the GS, as he earned his first collegiate top-10 and led the Saints men's team to seventh on Friday. Taber Engelken added a 24th place finish, while Kei Kullberg rounded out the scoring at 62.0 points in 34th position. Michael Williams (41st), Loudon Fruth (47th) and Nick Stenicka (DNF) also competed in the men's GS, which was won by the University of Vermont while the individual title was claimed by Middlebury's Robert Cone.
The Saints women's team was also seventh in the GS on Friday, as Sydney Henegan earned her top collegiate finish in 25th position. Hillenbrand (34th) and Alita Rogers (41st) capped the scoring at 46.0 points, while Amie Lonza (42nd) narrowly missed out on the scoring. Allison Visconti did not finish her second run in the GS, which was also won by UVM behind individual winner Kristina Riis-Johannessen.
Riis-Johannessen and the Catamounts also won the women's slalom on Saturday, while St. Lawrence finished in sixth place thanks to Hillenbrand's 17th place showing. Eliza Cowie added a top-25 showing in 25th place, while Rogers capped the scoring at 65.0 points in 27th. Lonza was 33rd, while Visconti and Henegan did not finish on Saturday.
On the men's side, Graham was again the top St. Lawrence performer in 24th place as St. Lawrence closed in 10th position. Fruth (36th) and Stenicka (37th) contributed to the scoring, while Kullberg (41st) and Williams (DNF) also raced the slalom. The University of Vermont won the team title thanks to individual winner William St. Germain.
The Saints will compete again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 6 and 7 at the 2015 Dartmouth Carnival at the Dartmouth Skiway.
