Saints goalie Hayton ties season record for shutouts in win

Freshman goaltender Kyle Hayton made 26 saves and tied the St. Lawrence University single-season shutout record in just his 13th collegiate start and the Saints scored a pair of second period goals just 1:37 apart in a 3-0 ECAC Hockey victory over Princeton at Appleton Arena Friday night.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league play as Hayton recorded his fourth shutout of the year, the most for a Saint goalie in a single season since 1965-66. He shares the record with three All America goaltenders, Bill Sloan, who had four in 1955-56, Richie Broadbelt, who had four in 1962-63 and Bob Perani in 1965-66. All three of the previous record holders had a shared shutout in their four while Hayton has gone the distance in all of his.

"Kyle didn't have to make a lot of difficult stops, but when they did get chances, he was a stone wall," said Saint coach Greg Carvel.

Among his 26 stops were two on Princeton breakaways and he has now stopped five breakaways in his last two starts.

The Saints dominated play from the start, but Colton Phinney turned in a solid goaltending effort for Princeton, 1-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league play. Neither team scored until the Saints broke through for their rapid fire goals early in the second period.

"I thought we set the tone from the start," Carvel said. "We played the way we had to to win the game, and like every other night this season, we received big efforts from a lot of different people. I thought the Alex Dahl-Joe Sullivan-Ryan Lough line played very well and created a lot of chances."

Sophomore defenseman Gavin Bayreuther opened the scoring with his third of the year as he charged up the middle and took a pass from Pat Doherty, rifling a shot under the crossbar at 3:39 of the second period for the game's first goal. Christian Horn then finished off a two-on-one with Brian Ward, taking Ward's pass and hitting a wide-open net for his second of the year at 5:16.

Freshman defenseman Matt Purmal added an insurance goal and became the 21st different player to score a goal in the Saints' first 13 games when he scored on a hard shot from the blue line off an offensive zone faceoff win by Sean McGovern at 17:18 of the third period.

"We did a good job with a young group of defensemen and they stepped in on the offensive end as well. It was good to see Gavin get one and get out of his little scoring slump and I thought Nolan Gluchowski had another good game for us."

Phinney finished with 37 saves for the Tigers as the Saints had a 40-26 edge in shots on goal.
