No. 11 Skidmore pulled away with two second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over the St. Lawrence field hockey team in the Liberty League opener Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Saints fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference, while Skidmore improves to 5-2 and 1-0.
Gabby Hyman put the Thoroughbreds on the board in the 18th minute when she got her own rebound after she was initially stopped by Saints' goalkeeper Sophie Cardenali. She battled Cardenali in the circle for the loose ball and eventually buried it for the game winner.
Despite trailing 1-0 at the half, the Saints held an 8-5 advantage in shots at the break, thanks to a flurry of late penalty corners. Lucy Stillman had the Saints' best scoring opportunity of the game inside the final minute of the first half, but hit the far post with her shot from the right side.
"We played very well in the first half, we really followed our game plan," head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "Credit to Skidmore for taking us out of the game plan in the second half, but I thought we still had several good passing sequences and gave ourselves opportunities to score."
Early in the second half, Skidmore's Mary Beth Zahnleuter extended the lead to 2-0 with a hard shot from the edge of the circle. After Delaney Yates blocked a shot off a penalty corner, Zahnleuter collected the loose ball and beat Cardenali inside the near post.
In the 51st minute, Caroline Saros notched Skidmore's third goal with another rebound in the circle on the near post.
Skidmore finished with an 18-13 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. They were also awarded 12 penalty corners to the Saints' four.
Molly Wood and Camille Burger led the Saints with three shots and Wood and Tori Shaffer both recorded two shots on goal.
Cardenali finished with seven saves for St. Lawrence, while Skidmore goalkeeper Zoe McGuire made four saves for the Thoroughbreds.
St. Lawrence will travel to St. John Fisher on Sunday afternoon for a 4 p.m. non-conference game against the Cardinals.
