Megan Caveny scored two goals to lead the Vassar College field hockey team to a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence University in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.
Vassar improved to 8-1 overall, 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Saints fell to 3-4, 0-1.
Emily Poehlein got the Brewers on the board in the 12th minute, converting a backhanded pass from Storm Sideleau to the right side of the cage into the short side.
Caveny doubled the lead to two goals less than seven minutes later after Cristina Lopez sent the ball across the net to the left side, and Caveny slipped a shot past Saints' goalkeeper Julia Hudson. Caveny added her second goal of the day in the 44th minute, one-timing a shot off Mikayla Young's centering pass from outside of the arc.
Vassar held a 17-7 advantage in shots, with Hudson finishing with 12 saves for the Saints, and Paige Amico stopping five shots to earn the shutout for the Brewers. Vassar held a slight edge in penalty corners, 9-6.
The Saints will be back in action on Sunday, facing St. John Fisher in a non-league contest at 1 p.m. on North Country Field.
