Saints Field Hockey closes 2017 with win over Wells

Bailey Sherwin scored two goals and Isabel Thompson recorded her first collegiate goal as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team defeated Wells College 9-2, wrapping up their 2017 season, Friday afternoon at North Country Field.

Kelsey Pollard kicked off scoring for the Saints after she tipped in a pass from Lucy Stillman. Just over two minutes later Melissa Grosshans capitalized on a through ball for her sixth goal of the season.

Jackie Reiss scored on a long shot across the arc to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage. Reiss's goal served as the game winner.

Sherwin recorded her first goal of the game sliding a shot past Allison Soloman in the 21st minute of play.

St. Lawrence held a 6-0 lead heading into the locker room after Thompson and Sherwin scored just about five minutes apart for the Saints.

Saints' leading scorer, Tori Schaffer fired an unassisted shot for St. Lawrence's seventh-straight goal. Alex Clark then gave the Saints an 8-0 advantage in the 39th minute.

Kate Wells and Alyssa Rocas tallied back-to-back goals for the Express. Rocas tipped a pass behind Sydney Giacin from the corner. Kelly Mason assisted on the play.

"It was a total team effort today," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "It was really nice to see all the plays executed well and I am very happy for the seniors who finished their season on a strong note."

Molly Wood recorded her third goal of the season and the Saints last goal of the game to seal the 9-2 win.

The Scarlet and Brown outshot the Express 25-10 and held a 14-5 shots on goal advantage.

Sophie Cardenali, Lexi Oskam and Giacin all recorded one save for the Saints. Soloman made five saves for Wells.

St. Lawrence closed its 2017 campaign with a 6-11 record, while Wells closed at 2-15 overall.
