First-year Katie Frederick made her first collegiate start and led the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team with 19 points, but the Saints fell to Williams College 77-57 in their season opener, Friday afternoon in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
The Scarlet and Brown jumped out to an early lead, and despite some back-and-forth action, controlled the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter (19-15).
The Ephs offense erased their four-point deficit from the first quarter and took their first lead of the contest, 23-21, after a steal and a layup from William's Mikaela Topper. The Saints regained the lead at 26-23 with an offensive rebound and put back from first-year Julia Breit.
St. Lawrence held a slight 30-28 lead heading into the locker room.
The Ephs took control early in the second half, using a 10-0 run fueled by Lauren Vostal to go up 45-39. This lead grew to as many as seven at various points in the third quarter, and grew to 20 by the end of the game. The Ephs outscored the Saints by 22 points in the second half.
"We really battle for three quarters tonight and played very well against a high quality opponent," said head coach Dan Roiger. "It got away from us in the fourth quarter when we fell from my fundamentals on both ends of the floor. It was a good start for our team, we are very much improved despite the loss."
The Saints were paced by Frederick, who also picked up 12 rebounds. Meghan Hynes scored nine points, while Marlee Gunn, Jenny Scudder and Annabell Pugliese all tallied seven.
Williams was led by Amanni Fernandez with 14 points and seven assists, while Lauren Vostal and Kristin Fechtelkotter recorded 13 and 12, respectively. Emily Peckham led Williams with 10 rebounds.
St. Lawrence opened up the season 0-1, while Williams starts out 1-0.
"Tomorrow we will have to bring our best against another high quality opponent that will present some difficult challenges for us," Roiger continued. "But that's what the early-season is about, each is a growing experience."
The Saints will return to Williams College to take on Husson University Nov. 18th at 12 p.m.
