Kyle Edwards scored 18 points leading three Saints into double-digit scoring but it was not enough as SUNY Oswego scored a 73-67 victory over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams in Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.

Edwards led the Saints (0-1) with his 18 points while Willie Zachery added 16 and Kyle Kobis chipped in 10 with Kobis and Edwards each connecting on three 3-pointers.

Oswego (1-0) started strong and opened up an early six-point lead and led by as many as eight points in the first half before Edwards finished the half with a pair of lay ups to trim the lead to 27-23 at the break.

In the second half, a Zachery jumper followed by an Edwards 3-pointer and a Zachery three=point play tied the game at 31-31. Riley Naclerio gave the Saints their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer with 16:39 left but Oswego battled back to tie the game back up at 36-36 three minutes later.

The Oswego rally was part of an 11-4 run for the Lakers that gave Oswego a five-point advantage at the 11:17 mark.

A Zachery jumper cut the lead to three at 10:25 and the teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before the Lakers hit six consecutive free throws down the stretch to maintain the lead.

Zachery and Edwards each hit late 3-pointers to cut the Laker lead to five but Oswego answered with a 3-pointer and four more free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

St. Lawrence shot 46 percent from the field (23-for-50) and hit 11-of-20 3-pointers (55%) on the day. Naclerio led the Saints with seven rebounds and also scored nine points while Zachery handed out a team-leading five assists.

St. Lawrence will face SUNY Brockport Wednesday with a 6 pm non-conference matchup in Burkman Gym.
