Senior Noah Bunton led the St. Lawrence men's soccer team with a goal and an assist in the Saints' 3-1 season-opening win over The College at Brockport in the North Country Classic on Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton on Friday.

The Saints scored a pair of goals in a span of just under six minutes early in the first half, the first on a redirection by Brendan McNamee and the second on a shot from distance by Bunton. The third St. Lawrence goal was an own goal by the Brockport goalkeeper in the 76th minute, after he mishandled a flat-angle shot from Manny Collins along the end line.

Bunton and the Saints converted their first corner kick attempt of the game in the 12th minute for a 1-0 lead when the San Diego, Calif. native sent the ball into the box and onto the foot of McNamee for a redirect behind Brockport's Joseph Romano.

In the 16th minute, Bunton collected the ball along the right side after Romano made a save on a shot by Tapshak Augustine and the Golden Eagles attempted to clear. Bunton settled and hit a shot with pace from 30 yards out that snuck inside the near post to extend the Saints lead to 2-0.

Brockport picked up momentum and came out strong in the second half, cutting the deficit to one in the 57th minute with a goal from Quintin Volpe. The visitors kept pressure on the Saints after the goal, earning three corner kicks in the next three minutes but would not get another shot behind sophomore keeper Mike Smith, who made his first career start for St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon.

Smith finished with four saves on the day, all in the second half, while Romano made six saves for Brockport. His attempt on Collins' shot in the 76th minute bounced off of him and inside the near post to help the Saints to the final 3-1 margin.

St. Lawrence held a 19-15 edge in total shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal, while the teams were even with six corners a piece.

The Saints will face Ithaca College in the second game of the North Country Classic on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
