St. Lawrence University freshman forward Patrick Doherty has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after scoring two goals in a 6-5 loss to the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Doherty, from Hanover, NH and a product of the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs program in the ECHL, staked the Saints to a 5-3 lead in the third period of Saturday's game before 10,556 people at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. His first goal came as he drove to the net, shrugged off a defenseman and banked a shot in off the goalie's pads. He scored his second on a power-play one-timer 1:41 later.
Saint junior center Kyle Flanagan was also a candidate for weekly honors as he was nominated for Player of the Week after scoring two goals and assisting on a third in each game at Michigan and RIT last week. His six-point week was a career best.
Doherty and the Saints are idle until Nov. 4 when they play Union at Appleton Arena to open the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey season.
