Saints Deschaine, Brown earn volleyball First Team honors

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team had four student-athletes voted to Liberty League all-conference teams, including first team selections Cristina Deschaine and Lexi Brown.

This is the second consecutive season that Brown was chosen a First Team hitter, while Deschaine was a unanimous choice for the honor after earning Honorable Mention status last fall. Becky Briggs was named all-conference for the first time landing on the Second Team, while Masha Kolesnikova earned Honorable Mention.

"As a program, we talk extensively about how each individual award is a reflection of our entire program because no individual is able to achieve what these four did without their teammates. I am very happy for Cristina, Lexi, Becky, and Masha as they were all integral parts of our season's success this year," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "They will be depended on heavily in the off-season and in 2015 as we continue to strive for a stronger finish at the end of the season, particularly in post-season play. All four of these individuals had strong seasons and I'm happy for the recognition that they are receiving because it is very well-deserved. However, I am confident that all of them, along with the rest of the team, finished the season unsatisfied and it is that hunger for the next level that will fuel them into the off-season."

Deschaine was one of four unanimous selections alongside Clarkson's Victoria Kirkemo and Kirstie Shurie and RIT standout Sarah Szybist. Deschaine's 133.0 blocks led the league and set a new University single-season record this fall. She also contributed 298 kills and hit .271 on the season.

Brown remained an offensive force in her junior year, posting a new career-high 379 kills en route to the 1,000 kill milestone. The Sayville, NY native had 10+ kills in 19 matches including a season-high 22 against Hartwick. Brown chipped in 22 aces, 173 digs and 44.0 total blocks this fall.

Briggs led St. Lawrence with a .310 hitting percentage this season, piling up a career-high 215 kills on 513 attempts. She had an outstanding 14-kill match against Ithaca with only one hitting error while chipping in 80.0 blocks throughout the campaign.

Kolesnikova made her presence felt in her rookie season as she was excellent both offensively and defensively at the net. The Elma, NY native finished seventh in the league in blocks per set and was the lone first-year in the top-10 in hitting percentage. She closed out the 2014 season with 197 kills, 50.0 blocks and 129 digs.

Clarkson, which advanced to its sixth straight NCAA Tournament by winning the league tournament, swept the major awards with Kirkemo being named Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year Evanne Jimenez and Coach of the Year Johan Dulfer.
