Saints come from behind to beat Clarkson in double overtime

Kyle Kobis hit a 3-point shot with 10.1 seconds remaining to send the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to overtime against Clarkson, and the Saints were finally able to pull away from the Golden Knights in the second overtime period in a wild 111-105 win on Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

"We showed a lot of resiliency tonight," said head coach Chris Downs. "This senior class hadn't beaten Clarkson in the last three years. Last year we got swept and that was one of the reasons we didn't host in the Liberty League playoffs, so this was a big win for us tonight."

Clarkson (5-5 overall, 0-1 Liberty League) led for almost all of regulation, taking a 4-2 lead two minutes into the first half and holding onto the lead until Kobis' 3-pointer tied the game. The Golden Knights led by as many as 12 points, and appeared to be headed to victory with a 72-60 lead with just 3:51 remaining in the second half.

The Saints, however, responded with a 12-2 run that cut the lead to just two points with two minutes remaining, setting up Kobis' dramatic shot near the end of regulation.

Clarkson built an 86-82 lead in the first two minutes of the first overtime, but the Saints once again responded, with Ben Crawford hitting a layup on a feed by Willie Zachery, then scoring on dunk after stealing the ball with 2:24 left in the first overtime. Kyle Edwards hit a pair of free throws with 1:36 left in the first overtime to give the Saints an 88-86 lead, their first of the game.

Zachery gave the Saints a 95-92 lead with a pair of free throws with 20.5 seconds left, but Clarkson's Barryn Shark converted an old fashioned 3-point play with 12.2 seconds left to send the game into a second overtime.

The Saints (9-1, 3-0) converted 12-of-14 free throws in the second overtime to put the game away.

"Our seniors made big plays," said Downs. "Kyle Kobis made a big 3-pointer to tie it and had some key rebounds, and Willie Zachery made all his free throws down the stretch."

Zachery scored a career high 31 points, going 17-for-20 from the free throw line, while Edwards added 23 points and 10 rebounds. Edwards finished the night just one point shy of joining the Saints' 1,000-point club.

Crawford added 16 points for the Saints, and Kobis scored 12 points and led all players with 12 rebounds. Dom DeRegis was the fifth player in double figures for the Scarlet and Brown, netting 11 points off the bench.

Derek Hart led all scorers with 35 points on 14-for-20 shooting from the floor for the Golden Knights. Drew Zlogar and Malaquias Canery both scored 15 points for Clarkson, while Shark had 13 and Mike Hayduk added 11.

"Clarkson is a really good team," said Downs. "Derek Hart is as good a big man as you'll find anywhere in the country."

The 216 points are the most in the St. Lawrence's series history with Clarkson, and the 111 points scored is the most for the program since St. Lawrence scored 123 points in a win over Lyndon State in the 1990-91 season. The game also featured 64 personal fouls, and six players fouled out — four for Clarkson and two for St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence has now won seven straight games, and the team's only loss was to Amherst, which is currently ranked third nationally. The Saints will play their next four games on the road, facing Brockport on Friday in a non-league game.
