Saints clinch Top 8 with 1-1 tie at Princeton

Freshman goaltender Kyle Hayton made a huge pad save in overtime and while St. Lawrence peppered Princeton with 35 shots on goal, the Saints had to settle for a 1-1 tie with the Tigers in a ECAC Hockey game at Hobey Baker Rink Saturday night.

The Saints, who gained just one point on the weekend road trip, remain solidly in second place in the standings, and locked up at least a first round home ice spot as they can finish no lower than eighth after Saturday's tie. SLU is now 16-11-3 overall and 12-5-1 in league play. Princeton completed a three-point weekend with Saturday's tie and is 4-17-3 overall and 2-14-2 in the league.

The Saints scored the first goal of the game for the second night in a row as Patrick Doherty took the puck near the red line with Princeton on a power play and broke away for an unassisted shorthanded goal at 9:47. It was Doherty's second shorthander of the season and sixth of his career which ties him for fourth on the all-time list.

Princeton tied it 12:49 into the second period on a power play drive from the left faceoff circle by Mike Ambrosia. The goal snapped a streak of 24 consecutive penalty kills by the Saints and was just the second power play goal in the last 11 games against the Saints.

The Saints outshot Princeton 16-9 in the third period, but neither team could get a shot past the other's goaltender. Christian Horn had a great chance as he went one-on-one with Princeton goalie Colton Phinney midway through the period, but Phinney got a pad on Horn's backhand bid at the post. Brian Ward also had a great chance to win it in regulation, but his shot on the power play clanged off the inside of the post and stayed out of the net.

Princeton thought it had the game won when Tucker Brockett broke in and shot in close with 58 seconds gone in the overtime, but Hayton stopped it with his pad and didn't allow the puck to cross the goal line, which was later confirmed by video review.

Hayton had three of his 21 saves in the overtime while Phinney had four, finishing the game with 34.
