Saints clinch second with 6-3 win over Dartmouth

Sophomore forward Woody Hudson scored a pair of goals and all four St. Lawrence lines figured in the scoring as the Saints clinched second place in the ECAC Hockey League with a 6-3 win over Dartmouth at Appleton Arena Saturday night.

The Saints, now 18-11-3 overall and 14-5-1 in ECAC play, snapped a seven-game home losing streak to the Big Green and swept their third straight league home series after a 5-1 win over Harvard on Friday. Dartmouth, which split its North Country trip with a 3-2 overtime win at Clarkson on Friday, fell to 13-10-4 overall and 10-8-2 in league play with Saturday's loss, just its second in the last 10 games.

"It was another night of what we have been doing all year," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "All four lines scored, the defensemen were solid from start to finish and we did what we had to do to come away a winner. We had the response when we needed it…they scored and we came right back each time.

"This team has made me very proud all year. We were picked to finish 11th in the polls, but we had a goal of first round home ice, then the bye and we met each of those. Now our third goal is to get to Lake Placid and play for a championship…we secured second with two games left to go in the regular season and our focus will be on making the next step to Lake Placid."

Sophomore Christian Horn opened the scoring for the Saints when he broke past the Dartmouth defense and put a shot over the shoulder of Dartmouth goalie Charles Grant at 10:12 for his sixth of the season. Hudson then made it a 2-0 game with his fifth of the year, tucking the puck in from point blank range.

Dartmouth got one back with just over six seconds to play in the second period as defenseman Rick Pinkston finished off a three-on-two on a play that the Saints argued was way offsides, but the Saints came right back with Hudson's second of the night just 2:46 into the third as he took a pass from Justin Bruckel and jammed it in. Freshman Joe Sullivan then took the puck away from a Dartmouth defender and scored on a backhand at 10:28 of the third to give the Saints a 4-1 lead.

Dartmouth got one back just 1:06 later when Pinkston scored his second of the night and fourth of the season on a blast from the top of the faceoff circle which went over the shoulder of Saint goalie Kyle Hayton to make it 4-2, but Saint junior Tommy Thompson slid one between Grant's pads as he was being pulled down on a breakaway for his ninth of of the year right after Pinkston's goal at 12:06.

Nick Bligh pulled Dartmouth to within 5-3 with his third of the season on a six-on-four power play as the Big Green pulled Grant for the extra attacker at 18:47, but Saint freshman Mike Marnell wrapped it up with his eighth of the year into the empty net at 19:08.

Hayton, who gave up more than two goals in a game for the first time in 13 games, finished with 28 saves for the Saints while Grant had 18 for Dartmouth.
