St. Lawrence University freshman goaltender Arthur Brey's first collegiate start will be a memorable one as the Saint rookie made 50 saves in a 2-2 overtime tie and then stopped all three Penn State shooters in a post-overtime shootout to add a little icing to a busy night.

Brey's start, the first time Kyle Hayton hasn't started a game in the nets since Dec. 12, 2014…a string of 27 straight… came against one of the most prolific, both in Arthur Brey had 50 saves at Penn State Thursday night.terms of shots and goals, teams in the nation and in a building which has sold out17 straight regular season games. Penn State came into the game averaging 44.2 shots per game, most in the nation and 5.60 goals per game, also tops in the country.

The 2-2 tie leaves the Saints 4-2-1 on the season heading into Friday's rematch while Penn State is now 4-1-1.

"Penn State made it a very frustrating game to play for us," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "THey played really hard and surprisingly we couldn't match them for the first half of the game,.It is a funny rink...there is no room behind the net, there are no corners, which is extremely different than our rink at Appleton where our defense is used to having some room to make plays. We had a game plan and the game plan and teh game plan wasn't off, but to give them credit, they played really hard and made things really tough on us. I thought we leveled it out in the second half of the game, but unfortunately allowed them to tie the game on a bad turnover to create a odd man rush. The bottom line is Art Brey played unbelieveably and saved us from a disgraceful evening."

Penn State certainly lived up to its reputation for putting a lot of rubber on net in the first period, putting 20 shots at Brey, but only one that counted got past the Saint rookie goalie. It appeared the Nittany Lions had scored in a scramble 4:41 into the game, but the goal was waved off and played continued. Penn State did score 49 seconds later on a shot by defenseman Kevin Kerr, but it turned out after replay that the earlier shot had gone into the net. The clock was reset and the first goal, scored by freshman wing Alex Marsh was the first of the game.

The Saints came back to tie at 6:32 as Brian Ward won an offensive zone faceoff back to the point and then headed toward the net. Gavin Bayreuther unleashed a shot from the point and Ward tipped it for his third of the year and the 1-1 tie.

Penn State was awarded three straight power plays in a span of 4:12 midway through the period, but the Saints with the help of some good saves by Brey came through unscathed and the first period ended 1-1.

The Saints took the lead at 15:$7 of the second period, snapping a lengthy power play drought in the process. Mike Marnell scored the goal, his third in the last two games, as he regained control after his goalmouth pass attempt was blocked and then lifted the puck over the shoulder of goalie Matthew Skoff. Christian Horn and Nolan Gluchowski assisted on the goal, the first for the Saints on the power play since game one and the first in the last 25 chances.

David Goodwin set up defenseman Vince Pedrie 6:26 into the third period to tie it, and it stayed that way the rest of the way despite some good chances by both teams.

Brey stuffed Penn State's Curtis Loik with 3:37 to go with a great glove save and then robbed David Glen's one-on-one bid with nine seconds to go in regulation. Skoff then saved the Nittany Lions when he stopped Tommy Thompson 50 seconds into the overtime. Brey had four overtime saves as Penn State had two power play chances including 19 seconds of two man advantage, but couldn't snap the tie. The Saints went seven for seven on the penalty kill against a Penn State unit which came in scoring at a 43 percent clip.
