Saints Bounce Back for Split at Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY- On a cold and blustery day at Towers field, the University of Rochester baseball team snagged their first Liberty League win of the year in a split of a doubleheader against St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon. Rochester took game one 3-2 while the Saints won game two 9-3.

Rochester moves to 4-11 (1-5 LL) on the year while St. Lawrence now sits at 10-4 (4-2 LL).Game one had a thrilling finish, with sophomore Chris Davis coming through with a big two run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Yellowjackets to a come from behind 3-2 victory. Davis drove in all three UR runs in the game.

St. Lawrence got on the board first with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning. After a Brian McGovney single and an Ethan Braddock walk, a throwing error on Bryan Palermo's grounder kept the inning alive scoring McGovney. The next batter Carter Franz then singled up the middle to make it 2-0 before UR was able to escape the inning after getting a double play.

The Yellowjackets were able to put up their first tally though in the bottom of the third when senior Alex Caghan reached on a single, stole second and then was sacrificed to third putting him in prime scoring position with one out. Davis then came up and grounded out to second scoring Caghan to make the score 2-1.

The pitchers then took over and held both teams scoreless until the seventh and final inning.

In the seventh, sophomore Sam Slutsky led off with an infield single and then stole second base but was sent back after Caghan was called out for batter interference. After another successful steal of second, freshman Tim LeSuer singled up the middle to get two men on

St. Lawrence then went to the bullpen for closer Kyle Donaldson. LeSuer then stole second himself to put the winning runs in scoring position. That's when Davis belted a double over the head of the Saints left fielder to score the winning runs leading Rochester to the 3-2 win.

UR starter Jon Menke pitched six strong innings while giving up three hits and two unearned runs. He struck out three while walking four. Junior Mike Zarella pitched a scoreless seventh inning and was credited with the win moving him to 1-3 on the year. Saints starter Jason Conde was saddled with the loss after being responsible for all three UR runs and pitching 6 1/3 of six hit ball. He walked two and struck out one and drops to 2-2 on the year.

Game two saw oe huge inning from St. Lawrence break open a tightly contested game.

St. Lawrence started out quickly, getting two runs in the first with some timely hitting. After two quick outs, UR starter got in trouble giving up three straight singles to Saints hitters. The third hit was a run scoring liner to center by Magovney. After a walk, UR starter Corey King misplayed a grounder back to the mound allowing the second run to score.

UR fought back with runs in the fifth and sixth innings after a ground out from pinch hitter Steve Pollakov and a single from sophomore Nick Carlson. After six, the score was tied 2-2.

In the seventh, St. Lawrence got to the Yellowjacket bullpen with six hits, one walk and a hit batter to explode for seven runs in the inning. Paul Piatelli, Matt D'Auteuil, Braddock, Palermo, Khifer O'Connor, and Jeff Kott all had RBI's for the Saints in the inning.

Down 9-2, Rochester was only able to muster one more run on a Rob Barnard groundout making the final score 9-3 in favor of the visiting Saints.

St. Lawrence starter Matt Skelly pitched eight strong, allowing seven hits and three earned moving his record to 2-0 on the year. His only issues were some control problems with four hit batters and two wild pitches. Andrew Weitzel pitched a scoreless ninth for the Saints

Freshman Ethan McGowan was tagged with the loss for UR (0-1) giving up two runs in the seventh while Zarella pitched again in the second game giving up five earned runs. King started and pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up four hits and two runs.
