Saints beat Eastern Connecticut 1-0, win another Lotto title

Senior Sean Scott chipped a shot over the charge of Eastern Connecticut goaltender Carl Appel 9:56 into the second half for the only goal of the game and senior goaltender Brian Abernethy registered a shutout in his first start since September of last season as St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team beat Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 to clinch the championship in the 2011 Lotto Invitational Tournament

Scott took a pass from Sam DeMello and worked past a ECSU defender as the goaltender came off the line to challenge. Scott's chip shot looped over the on-coming defender, landed with overspin and rolled into the net at54:04 for the game's lone goal.

It was the eighth Lotto Tournament title in nine tries for the Saints and came against a pair of solid opponents. The Saints beat Oneonta State 3-2 in Saturday's first round. DeMello was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all tourney team by teammates Mike Manfredia, Brian Gilloran, Will Congdon and Alex Laird. Eastern Connecticut (1-1) finished second and landed Cory Tobler, Aaron Smiles and Jon DeCasanova on the all-tourney squad, while Clarkson, a 1-0 winner over Oneonta on Sunday, was third on goal differential and has Trevor Blackwell and Jacob Duff named to the all star squad. Oneonta was represented by Nick Gregg and Ray Fitzpatrick.

"Oneonta won the SUNYAC last year and Eastern Connecticut went to the second round of the NCAA tournament, so those are two excellent teams. When I set this up, I figured if we were going to be good we were going to have to play the best...little did I realize we would be short players because of injury," said Saint coach Bob Durocher.

"We're still feeling things out a little bit, and we used some different guys in today's game. We are definitely going to miss Brendan Gorman, but it is going to take a full roster to win. We'll look to use some different combinations to try to take up the slack offensively."

While Sunday's game against Eastern Connecticut was a one-goal game, it was a dominating performance by the Saints. The Saints outshot the Warriors 10-1 in the first half and 18-4 overall for the game, had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.

"We had a lot of good possession, but we didn't put our chances away early," said Durocher. "We need to do a better job of finishing earlier and we need to be a little more dangerous."

Abermethy made three saves, the toughest coming early in the game, to record his fourth career shutout for the Saints.

"Brian has been working hard in practice and earned a chance to start the game. He did a very good job and made a couple of plays without using his hands to help earn the shutout," Durocher added.

"It was a good way to open the season at home and I know the guys were appreciative of the fan support."

The Saints will continue a series of rigorous early home tests with Rochester visiting MacAllaster Field Friday at 4 p.m. and Geneseo taking on the Saints in Canton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
