Chris Fernandez had three hits including two in the first game of the doubleheader leading the St. Lawrence University Baseball team to a split with Skidmore College Sunday on Tom Fay Field in Canton. The Saints won the opener 4-1 and dropped the nightcap 7-6 as Skidmore scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to salvage the win.

St. Lawrence (15-17 Overall, 6-13 Liberty League) took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning of game two as Mark Syron singled to start the inning, stole second and came in to score on a fielder's choice play later in the inning on a failed double play attempt.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Thoroughbreds had runners on the corners with two outs and hit a ball down the left field line with the winning run crossing the plate. Neither umpire saw whether the ball was fair or foul so the play was ruled a no pitch and the runners returned to first and third base and the batter returned to the plate. The next pitch was hit toward second base and a fielding error allowed the winning run to score from third.

In game one, Fernandez, Syron and Isaac Lewis had two hits each to lead the Saints who scored three times in the first third innings to take the early lead. In the second inning, Lewis singled and scored on an infield grounder for the early 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence added two more in the third inning as Erik Larsen was hit by pitch and scored on a Fernandez double to left centerfield. Fernandez scored later when he stole third and came home as the throw from the catcher was misplayed and ended up in left field.

Skidmore trimmed the lead to 3-1 with a single run in the fourth inning but St. Lawrence regained the three-run advantage in the fifth when Fernandez hit a two-out single, stole second and came home on a Syron single for the 4-1 Saint lead.

Ben Jenkins pitched four innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out three to earn the victory.

In game two, Syron and Lewis had two more hits each while Adam Reichel and Jake Levin also added two hits each to pace the St. Lawrence offense. Devin Robson and Kyle Liszewski scored two runs each and Levin had three runs batted in.

Skidmore built a 5-0 lead in the first three innings with two runs in each of the first and second innings and a single run in the thirdSt. Lawrence answered with two in the fourth. After Robson walked to start the inning, Liszewski, Schreyack and Levin hit consecutive singles that forced Robson home and loaded the bases. Mic Regan grounded into a double play but Liszewski was able to score to make it a 5-2 game.

In the eighth, St. Lawrence rallied for three runs to tie the game. Reichel doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a Robson single. Liszewski loaded the bases when he was hit by pitch. With one out, Reichel scored on a balk and Levin singled down the right field line to score two more runs tying the game.
