Big first innings helped the University of Rochester to a pair of wins over St. Lawrence baseball on Friday afternoon, as the Yellowjackets took the first game 11-2 and won the second 7-2 in Rochester. The Saints are now 8-6 on the season and 4-5 against Liberty League opponents.

Senior Mark Syron scored both St. Lawrence runs in the first game and had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning for the team's second run in game two. Michael LeFevre had a pair of multi-hit games on Friday afternoon.

In game one, Rochester belted three consecutive triples in the top of the first inning to open up an early 4-0 lead over the Saints.

In the third inning, Kyle MacDonald plated Syron with a double down the right field line to make it 4-1 in favor of the Yellowjackets and Syron hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth – his second in as many games – for the Saints second run.

Rochester added five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to push their lead to 11-2. In the bottom half of the frame, St. Lawrence left the bases loaded for the third time in the contest.

Sam Downes was the pitcher of record for the Saints, as he threw six innings and gave up 10 hits and nine runs while recording three strikeouts.

In the second game, Rochester opened up an early 3-0 lead with two singles, a hit by pitch and a trio of throwing errors by the Saints.

In the bottom of the second, MacDonald singled to lead things off for St. Lawrence but was thrown out trying to advance to third on a single by LeFevre. To batters later with runners on first and second, Mic Regan singled to left and drove in LeFevre for the team's first run of the game to make it 3-1.

The Yellowjackets added one run each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to increase their lead to 6-1 before Syron brought around classmate Chris Fernandez with a single to right to make it 6-2 and finish the scoring.

Alex Dermody got the start on the mound for St. Lawrence and went four and one-third innings, allowing five hits and six runs. Frank Grady came on in relief to finish out the game and gave up three hits on one run with two strikeouts.

The Saints will finish out their four-game set with Rochester with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field starting at noon.
