Saints baseball drop pair to RIT

League-leading RIT swept the St. Lawrence baseball team in the first of two Liberty League doubleheaders between the team's in Rochester, New York this weekend. The Tigers won game one 9-2 before shutting out the Saints 3-0 in the nightcap on Saturday.

Starters Sam Downes and Emmett Dunn both struck out a career-high number of batters in their outings for St. Lawrence on Saturday. Downes tied his career-high of six strikeouts, which he set earlier this season at St. John Fisher, while Dunn recorded nine strikeouts against the Tigers surpassing his previous high of seven.

Devin Robson and Brendon Frank both had multi-hit games on Saturday, with Robson going 3-for-3 in game one and Frank accounting for both St. Lawrence hits in game two with a 2-for-4 performance.

With the losses, St. Lawrence is now 10-16 overall with an 8-8 record against league teams. RIT improves to 23-7 and still has just one conference loss at 16-1.

Game 1 –

RIT jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and, although the Saints chipped away with a pair of runs in the middle innings, the Tigers added five in their final two at-bats to push their lead to 9-2 in the win.

Robson's 3-for-3 game at the plated included two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Taylor Digilio, Mic Regan and Evan O'Keeffe also added a hit a piece for St. Lawrence. Digilio had the other RBI in the loss, while Adam Reichel scored the team's second run.

With the Tigers leading 4-0, the Saints manufactured a run in the top of the fourth inning starting with a double to center off the bat of Robson. With two outs, Regan singled to third to put runners on the corners and Digilio followed with an RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 4-1.

In the top of the fifth, Reichel struck out swinging to lead off the inning but advanced to first on a wild pitch from Tigers' starter Brian Reed. After he advanced to second on foul-out to left by Michael LeFevre, Robson brought drove Reichel in with his second double of the afternoon for a 4-2 RIT lead.

But that would be all the Saints would get against Reed, as he finished with 10 strikeouts, including three in the final two innings, en route to his sixth win of the year for RIT.

For the Saints, Sam Downes allowed eight runs on eight hits in five innings of work, with six strikeouts and three walks to fall to 2-3 this season. Matt Phelan pitched an inning in relief, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts of his own.

Game 2 –

The game was scoreless into the fourth inning when RIT took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Daniel Zelgen. The Tigers extended the lead when Patrick Mylott scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and added another run in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run by Brett Kajganich.

Frank singled in the fourth and again to lead off the top of the ninth to finish with the only two hits for St. Lawrence. The Saints stranded five runners on base in game two, and left Frank at third base to end the game.

Dunn pitched seven innings for the Saints, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in the loss to fall to 3-1 on the year. Liam Rogers allowed one run on one hit – the home run by Kajganich – in an inning of relief.

For RIT, starter Stevie Branche earned the win after seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight. Brett Bouchard pitched two innings in relief and was credited with the save.

The Saints and Tigers will square off again on Sunday morning for the final two games of the four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Tiger Stadium in Rochester.
