Saints Alpine skier Visconti races in GS at NCAA Championships

St. Lawrence University senior Allison Visconti was in solid position to make a run at a top-10 finish after her first giant slalom run placed her in 16th position at the 2015 NCAA Skiing Championships at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY. However, a fall during her second run ended her hopes of an All-America finish.

Visconti's first run time of 1:13.46 got her into the mix, overcoming a torn up course near the top of the gate after over 30 runs from the top collegiate skiers in the nation.

The Ridgefield, CT native decided to take a more aggressive approach to her second run as she was just .5 seconds out of All-America honors. After a great start that put her into the lead for a short stretch, Visconti lost an edge and was sent off course for a DNF.

Ten women failed to complete one of their two runs at Whiteface on Thursday, including several elite competitors Kristina Riis-Johannessen of UVM, Ana Kobal of Utah, Libby Gibson of Dartmouth and Devin Delaney of Denver.

Mateja Robnik from the University of New Mexico, who was the first skier out of the gate in the first run and last in the second, won the national championship in the women's GS with a combined time of 2:22.56 for nearly a full second win over Denver's Monica Huebner. Kristine Haugen of Denver and Utah's duo of Kristiina Rove and Chloe Fausa rounded out the top-5 for First Team All-America honors. Robert Cone of Middlebury College won the men's national crown in GS.

Visconti and the alpine skiers will be back in action again on Saturday, March 14 for the slalom beginning at 8:30am. The 2015 NCAA Championships continue tomorrow at Mt. Van Hoevenberg with the men's and women's Nordic classical races at 10:00am.
