Saints 6-2 southern trip best since 2006

St. Lawrence University's baseball team posted its best spring break southern trip record since 2006 to start the 2012 season as the Saints went 6-2 and hit a robust .355 as a team in Ft. Myers Fl.

The Saints, who open Liberty League competition with back to back doubleheaders at Vassar Saturday and Sunday won their first two games on the trip, beating Mitchell College 6-5 and Fredonia 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. While Fredonia came back to win the second game 12-4, the Saints then rattled off four straight wins before New Paltz held off a late Saint rally for a 7-5 win in the final game of the trip.

SLU beat Otterbein and Elms, both by 7-4 scores and scored 31 runs in beating Lasell 13-3 and Thiel 18-0 before New Paltz stopped the Saint streak behind seven solid innings from Chris Chismar, who set the program record in career strikeouts. The Saints trailed 7-0, but rallied with five in the eighth as Mark Syrron and Matt D'Auteuil drove in two each.

Outfielder/DH Brian Magovney had a .571 average in four games for the Saints while junior outfielder Carter Franz led the regulars with a .500 average, playing in all eight games and coming through with 16 hits in 32 at bats with nine runs scored and eight driven in. He had five doubles and two triples and also led the Saints in slugging percentage at .781. Other top hitters who played in at least half the games included Matt DelUca who was eight for 17 for a .471 average in five games, rookie Mark Syron who hit .444 in four games, outfielder Paul Piatelli with a .379 average in eight games, second baseman Bryan Palermo, who hit .367, scored nine runs and drove in 11 in eight games and Khifer O'Connor, who hit .364 in eight games, scored seven runs and drove in seven runs.

On the mound, Jason Conde went 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA in two appearances, Matt Skelly was 1-0 with a 1.93 and led in innings pitched and strikeouts and rookie Andrew Schreyack was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA.
