POTSDAM, N.Y.—Saint Michael's College women's swimming and diving team and Clarkson University's men each won their respective competitions at the North Country Invitational at Maxcy Hall Natatorium this weekend. The Purple Knights edged Monroe Community College by a score of 468-465. The Golden Knights also just edged the Tribunes, 517-508. The Bears men placed third with a score of 301 and the women were fifth with 257 points.

Despite having first place finishes evade them this weekend; the Bears swimmers recorded several strong finishes. Senior Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) posted second place finishes in the 200 and (2:03.83) and the 100 Backstroke (55.03). He also helped the 200 and (1:29.41) and 400 Free Relay (3:16.67) teams to runner-up statuses with teammates freshman Jacob Van De Valk (Genoa, N.Y./Southern Cayuga), sophomore Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and junior Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee). Zapisek matched Costa's feat, finishing second in the 50 Free (21.93), less than a second off Jerry Miller's 1984 school record (21.17). He was also second in the 100 Fly (53.70), less than three seconds shy of his own Potsdam mark. Junior Delvyne Santiago (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) swam to a second place finish in the 1650 Free with a time of 18:33.71.

Sophomore Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) was second in the 200 Free (2:03.08) and fifth in the 100 Free (56.37), less than a second away from Jackie Miller's 1987 Bears' mark (55.42). Freshman Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) was second in the 100 Fly (1:04.16) and senior Victoria Blakeslee (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) was the runner-up in the 400 IM (5:09.07).

The Bears are now off until Dec. 5-6, when they wrap up their semester at the Hamilton Invitational.
