Saint men's cross country pack paces 1st Hoffmann win since 2010

St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team followed a familiar script at the 23rd Annual Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational on Saturday and came away with its third straight win of the season and its first in the Hoffmann meet since 2010.

While Ottawa Lions' runner Garrett DeJong was the individual winner, leading a 102 runner field through the 8 kilometer course in 25:49.26, the next eight athletes to cross the line were Saints as SLU rolled to the team title with a score of 20 points with the Lions second with 60, University of Ottawa third with 77 followed by Plattsburgh with 109, Clarkson with 128, Paul Smith's with 167, SUNY Canton with 212 and Potsdam State with 220.

It was the third time this season that the Saints, ranked first in the NCAA Atlantic Region and fourth in the nation, placed all of its scorers in the top ten.

There was just a 5.22 second gap between the top Saint finisher, Scott Smolensky, who was second in 25:58.43 and the final Saint scorer in Trevor Bibb, who ran 26:04.5. In between, Joe Smith was third in 25:58.96, Thomas Caulfield fourth in 26:01.38 and Spencer Patterson fifth in 26:01.80. Wesley Kirui was the sixth Saint finisher in 26:10.38 and Ben Fishbein completed the Saint top seven with a time of 26:36.18 and an eighth place finish.

Freshman Evan Page was ninth in 26:51.40 and the top rookie finisher in the field while Adam Banker was 16th in 27:27.44, Andrew Jarombek was 19th in 27:39.28 and Harrison Sloan was 20th in 27:45.80.

Jack Martin finished 24th, Zane Belden was 26th, Evan Garvey 29th, Caleb Kessler 32nd, Jason Hardacre 34th, Aaron Tompkins 39th, Ellis Toll 48th, Alec MacCrory 51st, Devon Calvin 54th, Josh Ringer 56th, Fletcher Starnes 64th, William Manning was 66th and Tyler Baldino finished 73rd for the Saints.

SLU will step up in competition next weekend, running in the multi-divisional Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.
