Saint men's cross country pack delivers win at Saratoga Invitational

St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team had all five scorers finish within three seconds of each other and all in the top ten as the Saints staged an impressive victory in the Saratoga Invitational hosted by Rensselaer on Saturday.

The Saints led a 14-team field with 39 points with Williams College, ranked third nationally in the pre-season polls second with 53 and NYU third with 83. Ithaca was a distant fourth with 124 with host RPI fifth and Hamilton sixth.

SLU, ranked 25th nationally in the pre-season polls, was led by Joe Smith who finished fifth overall in 19:03. Colin Cotton of Williams was the individual champion in 18:46 and the Ephs and NYU alternated finishers in the top four.

Smith then led the Saint scoring pack with Spencer Patterson finishing seventh in 19:04, Scott Smolensky eighth and Thomas Caulfield ninth, both timed in 19:05 and Trevor Bibb was 10th in 19:06.

Dennis Korir was the sixth Saint finisher, 16th overall in 19:19 while Wesley Kirui completed the top seven, finishing 18th in 19:24.

Evan Page was the second rookie finisher in the race, 26th overall for the Saints in 19:29 while Ben Fishbein was 27th in 19:31.

Adam Bankert finished 74th, Zane Belden was 83rd, Jack Martin 101st, Caleb Kessler 103rd, Evan Garvey 115th, Devon Calvin was 133rd and Daniel Driscoll was 157th among other Saint finishers.

The Saints have a week off and will return to action when they host the Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational on Sept. 27.
