A second-half goal by Rensselaer forward Coley Mowder helped the Engineers to a 1-0 win over the St. Lawrence women's soccer team in Canton on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers started the game strong, possessing the ball for most of the first half, but the team's finished in shots with 4 each through the first 45 minutes.

"The effort was definitely there today," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "While we had them on the ropes toward the end of the match, it just wouldn't fall for us."

In the 53rd minute, Mowder snapped the tie for the Engineers off a corner kick by Shelby Stromerson. The kick sailed high across the box and Mowder was able to win a battle in the air at the edge of the six yard box to head the ball home high inside the far post.

The Saints (7-4-0, 1-2-0 LL) had several opportunities on set pieces in the second half, including one that was whistled back when Caroline Crandall touched a quick pass to Lindsay Geier from 30 yards out. Geier ran a shot off the crossbar, but the play was whistled dead and the Saints were forced to re-kick.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, first-years Katie Stames, Hannah Merriam and Kaleigh White teamed up for what turned out to be the Saints best offensive chance of the day. Stames flicked a throw-in ahead to Merriam who then sent a deep cross into the box. White, who was streaking down the middle of the field, was able to get a touch on it, but was met by RPI goalkeeper Tori Riopelle who slid off the line to smother the ball and maintain the 1-0 lead.

Riopelle finished with four saves in the win for RPI, now 7-3-1 and 2-0 in Liberty League. Saints goalkeeper Kelsey West made three saves in the loss.

"Now we turn our focus to Middlebury which should be a good tune up for our next conference contest," Bari said.
