Rensselaer freshman midfielder Megan Jones tipped home a goal mouth pass with 9:22 to play in regulation time to lift the Engineers to a 2-1 Liberty League field hockey win over St. Lawrence on North Country Field in Canton on Saturday.

Jones scored her second of the season from junior Hana Murphy, who picked up a loose ball aftthreer a Julia Hudson save for the Saints and sent it in front where it got past Hudson for Jones' redirection. The goal snapped a 1-1 tie forged when the Saints converted a penalty corner just under four minutes earlier.

RPI improved to 4-5-0 overall and pulls even at 2-2 in the Liberty League while the Saints are now 3-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play heading into a non-league game at Morrisville State on Wednesday.

The Engineers did a solid job defensively, limiting the Saints to a total of nine shots overall and four shots on goal. Hannah Clough made two saves and Mac Reininger came through with a defensive save on a penalty corner for RPI. At the other end of the field, RPI pumped 29 shots toward the Saint cage as Hudson had a big day with 15 saves on 17 shots on goal. RPI also generated 14 penalty corners while the Saints had four.

The Engineers opened the scoring on a penalty corner as Jena Nawfel put the ball in play, Claire Cecilio stopped it at the top of the arc and Chloe Hutchinson fired her third goal of the season into the cage at 6:01 of the first half.

The Saints tied it on a penalty corner of their own as the ball was entered to Caroline Phinney, who took a shot from the top of the circle which was deflected past Clough by Anna Hughes for Hughes' second of the year at 55:55.

The Saints had some chances at pulling even again in the final 10 minutes of the game, but RPI turned them back and then spent the final 1:50 in the SLU end of the field to protect its lead.
