TROY, N.Y.—Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (4-2) made the most of its few offensive chances to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-3) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) stopped three shots for the Bears.
Defense controlled the play in the first half. The Bears allowed just four shots in the first 45 minutes and the Engineers didn't allow one. RPI did manage to sneak out in front at the 16:32 mark. Austin Betterly moved the ball down the right sideline, battled his way around a Potsdam defender and drove it into the upper left corner of the net. The score was unchanged at the break.
The situation didn't change in the second half. The Bears held RPI to just five more shots, but managed only three of their own. At 78:59, Trevor Bisson gave the Engineers some insurance with the contest's final tally.
Matt LaBranche didn't face a shot in the first half between the pipes for RPI. Ryan Nealon made one save in the second half.
The Bears are now off until Saturday when they travel to Plattsburgh State to open SUNYAC play at 1 p.m.
