SCRANTON, PA.—The University of Scranton (5-2) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (1-3) 13-7 on Tuesday afternoon. Senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison Conn./Daniel Hand) led the Bears with three goals and junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored twice.
The teams alternated goals through the first 15 minutes. Conor Carey opened the scoring at the 11:00 mark, but Stone tied the score 1:07 later. Carey made it 2-1 Royals at 5:57, but was countered by Potsdam freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) at 2:07. William Joyce gave Scranton a 3-2 lead at 1:02 and ignited a 5-0 Royals run.
Scranton scored four goals in a 2:18 span to take a 7-2 lead at 10:05 of the second quarter. Jake Haimson scored twice, followed by one from Kieran Fallon and Carey's third of the day. Soderquist ended the streak with Potsdam's third goal at 6:30. The Bears trailed 7-3 at the half.
Joyce made it 8-3 at 12:41 of the third quarter, but Soderquist netted his second at 11:30 to cut the gap back to four. Senior captain Casey Boulio (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) finished a feed from junior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) while the Bears were a man up at 5:15 to make it 8-5. Peter Roche balanced out the scoring with a goal at 4:19 and the Royals led 9-5 after three quarters.
The Royals pulled away with four straight goals in a 3:30 stretch to open the fourth quarter. John Sheridan, Roche, Connor Kirkwood and Haimson scored in succession to put Scranton up 13-5 at the 10:14 mark. Stone scored the final two goals of the contest with his second and third 50 seconds apart and the Bears trailed 13-7 with 8:35 to play.
Potsdam senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) allowed eight goals and made 10 saves in the first 35:44 and sophomore Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) stopped 10 shots and allowed five goals in the last 24:16. Alex Malecki made 11 saves to earn the victory for the Royals.
The Bears return home Saturday to host 2016 league runner up Brockport at 1 p.m.
