Roos women’s volleyball 5-0 at USCAA Championships: punches ticket to semifinals

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team went a perfect 3-0 on Friday in the Roos House to finish pool play unbeaten and the earn the number one seed out of Pool B when teams were reseeded for the beginning of elimination play.

The Roos defeated both the University of Cincinnati Clermont and Rochester College 2-0 to close out pool play at 4-0. The hosts then matched up with Carlow University, the four seed out of Pool A and put them down in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19).

SUNY Canton has been remarkable thus far in the tournament not dropping a single set over five matches and 11 sets.

vs. University Cincinnati Clermont

The Roos used a strong performance in their opening match of the day to defeat previously unbeaten University of Cincinnati Clermont in two sets. The hosts got out to a fast start in the opening set leading 13-7 after a big solo block at center net from Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY). Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) put a kill down deep in the back row to force the Cougars second time out of the set. A beautiful over on two from Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) made it 18-8 and Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) finished the set off with a kill and ace to give the Roos a 25-14 first set win.

SUNY Canton led 9-3 in the second frame after a  Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) kill and extended that advantage to 19-14 after Grimshaw and Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) teamed up for a double block. With tough defense and strong net play the Roos closed out the match 25-16.

Reynolds paced the Roos with six putdowns, six digs and two aces, while Grimshaw added four kills and four digs. Wicks had a stellar outing with three kills, two blocks a dig and an ace. Mynter posted a team-high 17 assists and 10 digs.

vs. Rochester College (Pool Play)

In its second match of the day SUNY Canton received another stellar performance from Reynolds who finished with eight kills and seven digs without committing a single hitting error. Bills posted six digs and four blocks controlling play at the net, while Grimshaw tallied five kills and five digs. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) finished with a team-high 12 digs, while Mynter added 21 assists, nine digs and two blocks.

SUNY Canton hit .266 as a team compared to just .092 for the Warriors. Lexus Medina and Paige TenBrink led Rochester College with seven and six kills, respectively.

vs. Carlow University (Quarterfinals)

The Celtics proved tough in the first set as SUNY Canton was able to pull away late down the stretch, 25-22. The Roos controlled the second set with 13 kills (13-2-38) compared to just seven for the visitors (7-7-31). Hitting errors continued to plague Carlow in the final frame as they had eight mishits compared to 11 kills. Meanwhile, the Roos had 13 putdowns coupled with just four hitting errors.

Mynter had a standout performance for SUNY Canton stuffing the stat sheet with 27 assists, nine kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Reynolds and Grimshaw tied for match-high in kills with 11 apiece, while combining for nine digs. Cornish was strong defensively with nine digs, while Bills floored seven kills.

The women's volleyball team will have a rematch with Rochester College Saturday at 10:00 a.m., this time in the semifinals of the United States Volleyball Championships. The game will take place in the Roos House, with the winner moving on to play the winner of Florida College and Alfred State College at 4:00 p.m to crown the 2014 USCAA Volleyball National Champion.
