(Canton, N.Y.)- A second-half rally by the SUNY Canton women’s soccer team against SUNY ESF Saturday came up one goal shy of a tremendous comeback as the Roos lost to the Mighty Oaks 3-2.
The Roos came out flat and struggled to get in to any offensive flow for most of the contest. But they came to life in the 65th minute when Kaylee O’Donnell (Dekalb Junction, N.Y.) scored from Jody Pitt (Ozone Park, N.Y.) to trim the lead to 3-1.
From that point on in the game the Roos swung the momentum in their favor and kept the ball in the offensive end for most of the final 25 minutes.
The Roos pulled within one goal six minutes after O’Donnell’s strike when Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) collected a loose ball just inside midfield and, after getting by one defender, fed Pitt along the left wing. Pitt carried the ball for several strides and then launched a high shot on the run that nestled in to the upper right corner of the net.
The Mighty Oaks did manage two great chances to build on their lead but two stellar defensive efforts by the Roos kept the game at a one-goal margin. With 12:20 remaining, a SUNY ESF player broke out along the right wing and found herself with a point blank shot. But Roos goalie Holli-Jo Cota (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) cut off the angle perfectly and was able to knock the shot down. The second chance came with 5:18 left on the clock when ESF again found themselves on a breakaway with a step on the defense. But Katy Sofranko (Lafayette, N.Y.) showed tremendous hustle and was able to get one step back in front of the offensive player and tip the ball away.
The Roos kept pressing which forced SUNY ESF to drop more players back on defense, but in the end the clock ran out on the Roos’ rally.
“We definitely didn’t play the best today but I was happy with the way the team responded in the second half” said head coach Kate Thomas-Moody. “We had some great chances to score and made some outstanding defensive plays down the stretch.”
The Roos head to SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday, Sept. 13 for the second annual Boyd Jones Memorial Cup. The opening kickoff is at 7 p.m.
