Roos women's lacrosse opens play in Florida with 16-5 victory v. Ohio Wesleyan

Port Charlotte, FL – MaryClare Bowes and Allison Auger finished with five points each as the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-5 victory v. Ohio Wesleyan University to start their spring break trip to Florida on Tuesday.

The Roos (2-1) scored the first five goals of the contest with two each coming from the sticks of Bowes and Logan Bush. The Battling Bishops (1-3) responded with three straight but Bowes tallied her third and fourth goals of the half over the final three minutes to give Canton a 7-3 lead at intermission.

SUNY Canton scored three straight out of intermission to extend their run to five unanswered tallies, taking control of the contest at 10-3 en route to the double-digit victory.

Bowes led all players with five goals, three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while auger added four goals and one assist. Bush finished with three goals and one assist, while Molly Denny found the back of the net twice. Carin Sherwood picked up a game-best five draw controls and added a pair of assists.

Sloane Baugmgartner and Hope Poolos paced OWU with two goals each. The Roos committed just seven turnovers compared to 15 for the Battling Bishops, while the Roos held the upper hand in draw controls, 16-5.

Nicole Piskorowski stopped three shots in her second win of the season, while Kelly Coffyn turned aside 14 shots for Ohio Wesleyan.

The five goals are the fewest given up by the Roos since last season when they gave up just two in a 17-2 victory v. Wells College.

The women's lacrosse team will play Fitchburg State College on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in Port Charlotte.
