(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s ice hockey team will make their final home game of their inaugural season a special one, when they host Sophie Kawejsza Night on Friday, Feb. 1.

The Roos face off against the St. Lawrence University club team at 7 p.m. at Roos House, and the night will be dedicated to Sophie, a young girl from Camillus, N.Y., who lost her battle with a brain tumor two weeks before her ninth birthday.

SUNY Canton head coach Melissa Lomanto and assistant coach Dave LaBaff were at a hockey camp at Morrisville State College, when they noticed a television segment about Sophie and a Skate-A-Thon held in Camillus to raise money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. That segment spurred the idea to host a similar event at SUNY Canton and have the Roos get involved in a very worthy cause.

Sophie’s mom, who coaches a U12 girls team in Syracuse, and her two older sisters, who also both play hockey, will be in attendance on Friday, along with other girls teams such as the Potsdam and Canton U10 Teams, the Camillus U12 and U14 Teams, the Tri-Town Timberwolves, the Massena U14 Team, and the Canton Central School girls team.

The Camillus U12 Team will join the Roos on the ice for pre-game warmups and the national anthems, and then Sophie’s mom will drop the puck for a ceremonial opening faceoff between one of Sophie’s sisters and a SUNY Canton player.

During the first and second periods, the U10 Teams from Potsdam and Canton will play a 7-minute game, and there will be a shootout with select players during the second and third periods.

Any female hockey player that comes to the game can visit the raffle table and enter a drawing for a free week at the Can-Am hockey Camp.

Tickets will also be sold for other raffle prizes such as: a free session at the Blue Line Hockey Camp at Morrisville in the Spring of 2013, a basket full of food, wine and spices from the Oswego area, a Vera Bradley bag and fleece blanket, a jewelry set, a homemade lacrosse stick, an Easton one-piece hockey stick, a bucket of gourmet popcorn, and a SUNY Canton hockey jacket.

There will be two silent auctions for two custom-made Sophie Jerseys that SUNY Canton players will wear on Friday. Paper Skates will be sold for a $1, and there will be Chuck A Puck held between the second and third periods. All the proceeds will go directly to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

There will be no admission charge for Friday’s game.
