Roos women's hoops flourish in fourth quarter in 68-62 victory v. Villa Maria

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team used a strong finish outscoring visiting Villa Maria College 22-13 in the fourth quarter to earn a 68-62 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Roos House.

Trailing 54-48 with 8:55 remaining the Roos (8-13) used a 20-11 spurt to open up a five point lead at 64-59 after a Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) layup with 1:24 remaining.

The Vikings (17-8) trimmed the deficit to two after a Shaquana Owens three-pointer with 58 seconds remaining but Caselynn Fulton (Saint Cloud, MN) buried a 12-foot jumper off a pass from Logan Tallman (Heuvelton, NY) with 42 seconds to play. Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY) nailed both of her free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.

Play was extremely even in the opening half as neither team led by more than six during the opening 20 minutes of play. Villa Maria led 22-16 after a Jayvonna Kincannon lay-up with 6:35 to play in the first half but the Roos closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to take a 28-27 lead into intermission.

The Vikings outscored SUNY Canton 22-18 in the third quarter to take a slim three point lead into the final period before the Roos comeback.

Brianna Sayer (Hermon, NY) led the Roos with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Laroche also added a double-double of her own with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Terrance was effective posting 17 points and nine rebounds on 8-for-16 shooting. Fulton chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds, while Tallman dished out a game-high nine assists to go with her six points.

Magan Campbell (25), Kincannon (21) and Owens (15) combined to score 61 of Villa Maria's 62 points. The Roos dominated on the glass 61-37 including turning 20 offensive rebounds into a 20-4 advantage in second chance points. SUNY Canton also held the edge in bench points (18-0) and points in the paint (38-16).

The women's basketball team has a quick turnaround as it will host the College of St. Joseph on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Roos House.
