(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team got off to a fast start against the University of Vermont but the Catamounts rallied to tie the Roos 2-2 in overtime in an ACHA Division I game Sunday in Canton.

The Roos (2-5-1 ECWHL, 3-8-1 overall) scored on their very first shift of the game when leading scorer Grace Lyon (Winthrop, N.Y.) scored unassisted 29 seconds into the first period. Freshman Steph Kushnir (Goshen, N.Y.) pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 1:03 mark scoring her first collegiate goal from freshmen Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.) and Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario).

That lead would hold through the rest of the first period, all of the second period and most of the third period before the Catamounts rallied to force an extra session. Vermont's Riley Fontaine trimmed he Roos lead in half scoring at the 12:45 mark of the final stanza and then she scored again to force overtime with just 23 seconds left in regulation.

SUNY Canton had a great chance to end the game in the first minute of the five-minute overtime when sophomore Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, N.Y.) broke in all alone on goal but was stopped by Vermont goalie Rosie Gluck, who had 17 saves. The Roos did get a power play opportunity in overtime when a Catamounts player was whistled for interference shortly after Hutcheson's attempt and generated several good scoring chances that came up empty.

Vermont manufactured two good short-handed breakaway chances during their penalty kill but was stoned each time by freshman goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.), who finished with 25 saves on 27 shots.

The Roos are next in action on Saturday, Dec. 8 when they play at John Abbott College in Montreal.
