Shelton, CT – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team scored three second period goals and tied the game at two, but a strong finish gave host Sacred Heart University a 6-3 victory on Saturday.

The Pioneers netted a pair of first period power play goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Roos (0-4) responded 3:02 into the second when Grace Lyon (Brasher Falls, NY) lit the lamp off a pass from Lindsey Hall (Ancaster, ON). Four minutes later SUNY Canton tied it at two all with the extra skater as Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) netted her first goal of the season off a pass from Kjirstin Hoberg (Grand Forks, ND).

Sacred Heart responded at the 10:16 mark when Teagan Ketchum made it 3-2 Pioneers and just more than four minutes later Cassandra Hanlon added the hosts' third power play score of the game.

The Roos continued to battle as Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) scored her team-leading second goal of the season to get the Roos within 4-3 after the second period. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) and Tia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY) were credited with assists on the play.

In a game that was much closer than the score indicated the Pioneers tacked on two goals in a 34 second stretch late in the third period for the 6-3 final. Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) had a strong game in net stopping 31 shots for SUNY Canton, while Nicole Magee stopped 12 shots in the win and Amanda Fontaine turned aside seven shots in relief.

The Roos went 1-for-6 with the skater advantage, while Sacred Heart converted on 50 percent of their opportunities (3-for-6). Troiano led SUNY Canton with six shots and 18 faceoff wins, while Mitchell, Hall and Carroll each challenged the opposing goaltender three times.

The women's hockey team will open its home schedule on Friday and Saturday when it hosts Stevenson University at 7 and 2 p.m., respectively.
