Reisterstown, MD – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team got an early lead but was outscored 3-1 in the final period en route to a 4-2 road loss in the season opener for both teams against host Stevenson University on Saturday evening.
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) got the scoring started just 4:44 into the first period on an unassisted marker. The Mustangs would knot the game at one apiece 3:56 into the second frame when Madison Lange found the back of the net off a pass from Megan Alexander.
The teams took a 1-1 tie into intermission. The Roos regained the one-goal lead just 45 seconds into the third period when Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) tallied an unassisted marker. Stevenson University responded with three straight power play goals over a four minute span as Molly O'Neil, Jessie Capanelli and McKenzie Taggart all found the back of the net on the extra skater advantage.
Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) stopped 25 shots in net for SUNY Canton, while Mackenzie Bruch made 19 saves for Stevenson. The Roos and Mustangs are back in action Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
