Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team scored two goals each in the first and third periods to earn a crucial 4-1 Colonial Hockey Conference victory against visiting Johnson & Wales University on Friday afternoon in the Roos House.

The win puts the Roos 2.5 games clear of the Wildcats for fourth place in the conference standings with three games to play.

Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) got the scoring started at 10:52 of the opening period when she tipped home a Reagan Lynn (Chicago, IL) wrist shot from near the blue line. Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) fed the puck from the deep right corner out to Lynn at the point to set up the shot that sailed over the pad of Kami Weiner.

The Roos (6-15-1, 6-4-1 CHC) doubled their lead just 16 seconds into a power play. Anna Lagzdina (Ozolnieki, Latvia) won the ensuing faceoff after a Wildcats boarding penalty and Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) made it pay off as she buried her third goal of the season to put the Roos ahead with 3:12 remaining in the period. Noelle Niemiec (Staten Island, NY) also earned a helper on the play. SUNY Canton held a 10-4 shots advantage after one period.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the middle period as the Roos held a 16-6 edge in shots taking the two goal advantage into the final frame.

Johnson & Wales (4-18-0, 4-7-0 CHC) cut their deficit in half 5:38 into the final period when Kayta Klinof netted her first collegiate goal on the power play off passes from Kathy Ensor and Madisan Millar.

The Roos responded at the 14:12 mark with an insurance goal from Whitney Bernier (Newport, VT) as she beat the defense down the ice in transition and finished past Weiner. Lagzdina earned her second helper of the evening on the play. SUNY Canton added an insurance goal with 2:23 remaining as Niemiec fired a shot from the blue line that went off the glove of Weiner and in for the 4-1 final. Pele earned an assist on the play to seal the victory.

Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) turned aside 16 of the 17 shots she faced in her fifth win of the season, while Weiner made 29 stops in the loss.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Roos House.
